In May 2006, archaeologists with the Texas Department of Transportation discovered the Little Paint site in the road cut of a highway immediately south of the South Llano River, Kimble County, Texas. Because the road needed to be widened, the state sponsored archaeological excavations to assess and recover any significant portions of the site that would be affected by the road work. In 2006 and 2007, SWCA Environmental Consultants excavated 102 square meters, revealing a stratified site with occupations dating back 6000 years. The Toyah component, which typically dates from A.D. 1300 to 1650, was the most robust and intact. Consequently, this component became the focus of intensive investigations.
